How Andriy’s treatment is progressing:

Wounded:

Andriy, 43, fighter with the 93rd Brigade, wounded near Pisky (Donetsk region).

Wound:

Nonunion fracture of third metacarpal bone with defect.

Treatment according to traditional methods did not lead to the bone healing for a year. Now the fighter can not fully use his hand because of persistent pain at the site of the injury.

Andriy, a fighter with the 93rd Brigade, was wounded in October 2014 when the soldier came under a mortar attack from separatists. One of the shells exploded near his unit and as a result Andriy and eight of his colleagues were wounded, one was killed instantly.

Shrapnel lodged in Andriy’s hands and feet led to the soldier undergoing several operations, the last of which – on his hand – was done in hospital on January 21 when the doctors tried to replace the defective metacarpal bone fragment. However, for almost a year fusion has not occurred.

When Andriy learned of the existence of biotechnology to quickly heal nonunion fractures and bone defects, he immediately turned to the medical company ilaya, which is performing the treatment as part of the social project Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded. There, one of the doctors developed a treatment regimen that can restore the bone.

Andriy is an entrepreneur from Dnipropetrovsk and father of three children. He voluntarily joined the military and in July was sent to the front. He says from the very beginning of the “Russian Spring” he realized Ukraine’s eastern neighbor was preparing for a drawn-out war.

Budget update:
In 2016 Andriy was treated for the incorrectly healed fracture of metacarpal bones with the defect in bone tissue. Now the bones have been restored, but for the maximum restoration of the hand functions in January 2017 an additional operation was performed. During the surgery, one of the fixing plates was removed, and the plastic surgery of the defect and the tendon of the extensor tendon was performed. It should be noted that the defect of the tendon was detected only during the operation, while in the hospital statement it was noted that the tendons were restored and the sewn sutured. The cost of additional operations amounted to 70 488 hryvnias.
