Help Me Breathe

Newborn Kyivans are waiting for apparatus that will allow to save their lives

The doctors at Kyiv prenatal center №3 continue fighting for the life of little Eva, who was born pre-timely and cannot breathe on her own. The girl developed an intrauterine infection that affected her lungs. Over two last weeks the doctors have managed to stabilize the baby’s condition, still it remains serious. Eva has constantly been on an ALV apparatus. But the situation is worsened by the fact the maternity home has no gas analyzer, the device designed for precise calculation of additional oxygen supply for such kids.

Valentyna Nahnybida, head of the intensive care unit, explains that now the existing equipment the ICU currently possesses, allows measuring only the level of oxygen in blood. But in critical conditions, it is essential to know the percentage of other gases in a baby’s blood. Gas analyzer is the device that can help in this case. “Knowing precise gas proportions allows to choose optimal therapy for a child and gives him or her the possibility not only to survive but also avoid severe complications and maintain good health. Overdose of oxygen may bring in serious complications. To avoid this, we need to apply gas analyzer,” – she said.

Little Eva who has been fighting for her life, needs the device desperately. There are many such kids at the Center. Since the beginning of the year, 2 365 babies have been born at the Center, and 112 of them needed applying gas analyzer. Over the last August, 14 out of 399 babies failed to get the essential data that might have been provided by the apparatus.

To save thousands of children, the People’s Project volunteer center launched the Help Me Breathe project. Its objective is to buy a gas analyzer for Kyiv perinatal center №3. The apparatus equipped with necessary extra equipment costs 245 880 UAH. Together we can effectively get that money and give a chance for life and secure healthy childhood to hundreds of little Ukrainians.
