One of the most difficult patients of The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project Olexiy will go through the second stage of the main surgery for the left leg. He already went through ten surgeries at the state hospitals, and received several preparatory surgeries at The Ilaya Clinic. Tomorrow Olexiy’s affected area will be filled with the cellular materials, that eventually become the new monolith bone. The volunteers of The People’s Project gathered for the treatment of Olexiy more than 500,000 UAH of the people’s donations.

Olexiy was injured in February of 2015 near the Donetsk airport, where he was defending the Ukraine as the part of the Right Sector unit. His both legs were severely wounded with the close explosion. The right leg is already fixed, but the left one is not that easy to treat.

The left shin was broken to pieces. For a long time doctors have been trying to put it back together. The remains of the bone were fixed together with the orthopedic pin, that went through the whole length of the bone. The fracture was not healing. Before Olexiy joined The Bioengineering Rehabilitation for Wounded Project the osteomyelitis joined to the consequences of the injury.

The severe infection injured the significant part of the bone, so the first job was just to save the leg. The infected areas were cleaned, and the remains of the bone and tissues were brought into the correct position. The bone was reconstructed with the help of the bone implant. The plastic surgery was performed and the fractured bone was fixed with help of the Ilizarov apparatus. Olexiy is ready for further treatment. Tomorrow the cellular material will be used to accomplish the bone reconstruction.
Olexiy is sincerely eager to return to casual life
The treatment of Olexiy is possible only due to the people’s donations. The volunteers of The People’s Project gathered for him over 500,000 UAH. The surgeries with the use of advanced cellular technology are now performed only at The Ilaya Clinic. And this kind of surgeries is very expensive. But for many seriously wounded soldiers this kind of surgery is the last chance for the recovery. On top of that, for the defenders of Ukraine from the ATO zone the surgeries at The Ilaya Clinic are performed for the price of the cost of materials. If you think, 20,000 USD is not that huge amount if it can prevent amputation, prosthesis and lifelong disability. The government does not allow to finance this kind of a treatment from the state budget. So the only chance for the wounded defenders of Ukraine to get back to normal is to fiance the cellular treatment at the expense of the people’s donations.
