Enemy Drone Detection Systems: EW and Detectors as the Key to the Safety of Our Soldiers

On the modern battlefield, unmanned aerial vehicles are no longer just a reconnaissance tool. They continuously influence the tactical situation: monitoring positions, adjusting artillery fire, and directly threatening the lives of both military personnel and civilians. Therefore, today it is not only firepower that matters, but the ability to detect a drone in advance — before it gets close.

That is why the “Blahochestia” Foundation supports fundraising for enemy drone detection systems — radio electronic intelligence (REI) systems and electronic warfare (EW) elements that provide units with time and information for a proper response.

What are drone detectors and why they are critically important

Detectors do not work with the drone itself, but with its radio signal — control or video transmission channels, including those used by FPV drones. This allows:

1. to detect the presence of a drone while it is still approaching;
2. to identify the frequency range and type of signal;
3. to assess the level of threat and prepare for action;
4. to gain valuable seconds for taking cover or responding.

In real combat conditions, these seconds often mean saved lives.

WHOOVER 3 — portable video signal detector

WHOOVER 3.3 is a compact device for detecting analog video signals from FPV drones. It scans the key frequencies used by drones and alerts users to their activity before the drone becomes visible.

Such a detector enhances situational awareness in positions where there is no room for error and where early warning is critical.

“Chuika 3.0” — a next-generation Ukrainian detection system

One of the most effective REI devices already used by combat units is the portable detector “Chuika 3.0”, developed by BlueBird Tech.

Key features of the device:

• interception of FPV drone video signals in the 1.2 / 3.3 / 5.8 GHz bands;
• full frequency scan within 4–8 seconds;
• operating range of up to approximately 4 km, depending on the antenna and conditions;
• visual and audio alerts for immediate response;
• ability to view the analog video seen by the enemy drone operator.

This is no longer just an alert system, but a situational awareness tool that allows military personnel to better understand enemy intentions and adjust their behavior in advance.

How effective drone detection tools are selected

Practice shows that a truly useful detector should meet several requirements:

1. operate within the frequency ranges used by FPV drones;
2. quickly scan the spectrum and accurately distinguish threats from background signals;
3. not react to civilian communication sources such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.;
4. have sufficient sensitivity for early detection;
5. be simple and reliable in field conditions.

Why it matters

In a war where drones have become one of the primary tools for reconnaissance and strikes, the ability to detect them changes the very logic of combat. REI devices and detectors are not additional equipment — they are a basic level of safety for units that operate daily under aerial threat.

Thanks to donor support, the “Blahochestia” Foundation is already supplying such equipment to our military. However, the need continues to grow, as the enemy constantly improves its technologies.
