In modern high-tech warfare, information determines everything. The success of any combat operation — from reconnaissance to delivering precision artillery strikes — depends on a matter of seconds and uninterrupted communication. When the enemy destroys cellular communication towers and attempts to completely wipe out fiber-optic networks along the front line, satellite internet Starlink remains the only bridge between units and command.
Today, Starlink is not about comfort or watching videos in a dugout. It is a basic necessity and one of the main tools for survival and combat operations for the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
Unlike traditional satellites, which are located in geostationary orbit (more than 35,000 km from Earth), Starlink (SpaceX) satellites operate in low Earth orbit (approximately 550 km). This ensures minimal signal latency (ping) and high data transmission speeds comparable to urban fiber-optic internet.
On the front line, this technology has solved the main problem: ensuring stable communication in conditions of a complete absence of infrastructure.
Key areas of Starlink application on the line of contact:
A new development — Starlink Mini — is now gaining particular popularity on the front line. While a standard Standard Actuated or V4 terminal requires separate transportation, a 220V power supply (through an inverter or generator), and time for deployment, the Mini version has become a real game-changer for maneuvering groups.
Compact dimensions and weight: The terminal, about the size of a thick laptop or tablet, easily fits into a military backpack.
Low power consumption: Starlink Mini can operate directly from an ordinary high-capacity power bank (via Type-C USB-PD) or from a vehicle’s 12V system. This makes the unit autonomous for several days.
Built-in Wi-Fi router: Fewer wires — fewer risks of damage during shelling or a rapid withdrawal.
Mobility for Special Operations Forces, reconnaissance, and infantry: Assault and reconnaissance groups that go on missions on foot cannot carry heavy stations. Starlink Mini allows them to maintain cryptographically protected communication with the “mainland” directly from a trench or forest belt.
A question often arises: “We have already purchased thousands of Starlink terminals, so why does the need not disappear?”
Unfortunately, Starlink on the front line is a consumable item that is constantly at risk:
Artillery and mortar shelling: The terminal must be placed under the open sky, making it vulnerable to shrapnel.
Targeted attacks by enemy FPV drones: The occupiers hunt for antennas because they understand that destroying Starlink “blinds” a unit.
Constant movement and active combat operations: During rapid withdrawals, redeployments, or intense assaults, equipment is often damaged or lost.
Wear and tear in harsh weather conditions: Rain, mud, salt fog, and frost gradually cause equipment to fail.
Every Starlink or Starlink Mini terminal paid for and delivered to the front line means:
The “Blagochestia” Charitable Foundation and the All-Ukrainian Volunteer Center People’s Project continue to systematically provide units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine, and the Marine Corps with communication equipment. Every hryvnia you donate to the Starlink fundraiser is a directly proportional contribution to our warriors’ situational awareness and their safety.
