It’s no overstatement: the cart is a legendary Ukrainian military vehicle. It may or may not be a Ukrainian innovation. However, the cart marks a whole chapter in the history of fight for Ukrainian independence. The tachanka (cart) was a horse-drawn machine gun platform, usually a cart or an open wagon with a heavy machine gun installed in the back. A cart could be pulled by two to four horses and required a crew of two or three (one driver and a machine gun crew). A number of sources attribute its invention to Nestor Makhno, the commander of an independent anarchist army in Ukraine during the Russian Civil War. Of course, the carts of the past were of their time. Today an open and vulnerable cart or wagon is unthinkable.
The modern iteration, which is widely used by the best world armies – is a well armored SUV with a firm platform for affixing a weapon. Because the lives of team members are not trivial our aim is to save as many of them as we can.
At first we plan to “carve” up the pickups of the jeeps and then sheathe the cars with armor. “People’s carts” will be customized in accordance to individual needs of every military unit.
